Buddha Purnima – A Celebration of Peace, Wisdom & Compassion

Buddha Purnima, also known as Vesak or Buddha Jayanti, is the most significant festival for Buddhists around the world. It commemorates the birth, enlightenment (nirvana), and death (parinirvana) of Gautama Buddha, all of which are believed to have occurred on the full moon day of the Indian lunar month Vaisakh. In 2025, Buddha Purnima was observed on Monday, 12 May.

At Delish Meals, we honour such spiritually rich occasions not just with reflection but with simple, wholesome, and balanced vegetarian meals—true to the teachings of the Buddha.

🕊️ Who Was Gautama Buddha?

Siddhartha Gautama, born in Lumbini (modern-day Nepal) around 563 BCE, was a prince who gave up his royal life in pursuit of truth. After years of meditation, he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya, India, and came to be known as the Buddha, or the Awakened One.

He taught the world the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path—principles that encourage a life of moderation, compassion, mindfulness, and self-discipline.

🌕 How Is Buddha Purnima Celebrated?

Across India and the world, devotees mark the day with quiet reflection and acts of kindness:

  • Temples are decorated, and devotees offer flowers, candles, and prayers

  • People practice non-violence and compassion, refraining from meat and alcohol

  • Many observe a vegetarian or vegan diet, engaging in acts of charity

  • Community kitchens (langars) distribute simple, satvik meals

At Delish Meals, we see Buddha Purnima as a reminder of how food can reflect values: purity, balance, and compassion. Our daily and weekly vegetarian tiffin packages are designed to offer just that—meals that are comforting, clean, and full of nourishment.

🍲 The Spirit of Simplicity in Food

One of the guiding values of Buddhism is Ahimsa, or non-violence, not just in action, but also in what we consume. On Buddha Purnima, many choose to eat:

  • Light meals like khichdi, moong dal, sabudana khichdi, sabudana vada and vegetable stew

  • Non-spicy sabzis, lentils, and steamed rice

  • Fresh fruits, nuts, and herbal teas

These are the kinds of meals we lovingly prepare every day at Delish Meals. Whether you’re observing a religious fast, looking for healthier meal options, or simply want a break from restaurant food, our Indian vegetarian meal plans are crafted to support mindful living.

🧘 A Quote to Reflect On

"Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without." – Gautama Buddha

As we honour the teachings of the Buddha, we’re reminded that peace can begin with something as simple as a balanced meal, enjoyed slowly and with gratitude.
